The Lottery and Other Stories

These are three book covers I designed using different methods for Shirley Jackson's book “The Lottery and Other Stories.” The Lottery is one of my favorite short stories and I used its plot to inform my designs. Without many spoilers, The Lottery tells the story of a small town and their preparation and excitement for a yearly ritual involving, among other things, the drawing of names and a pile of rocks. It, along with Jackson's other stories, arrive at surprisingly unnerving places, inspiring this typographically based layout created solely with InDesign. Using overlapping letters and the strong colors of black and red, I aimed to convey the unsettling and sometimes horrific themes in her work.
In the other two layouts I drew from imagery appearing in the titular story.
